When playing an online crossword puzzle, sometimes with a word you've never heard of before, what do you do? Go to the thesaurus and trace its roots? Google it? A lot of people end up doing nothing. It's not that they're lazy, they don't have time. The zenith of multitasking is this: with all those apps on your phone. Cracking a crossword puzzle is a great way for anyone to improve their vocabulary and their knowledge in general. In the past, not everyone had the luxury of a dictionary or a computer to access Wikipedia. To fill this need, crossword puzzles have been around since 1913. In fact, it is estimated that there are now over 2,500 newspapers with crossword puzzles for their readers. Crosswords are a beloved pastime that can give you a lot of pleasure and a good vocabulary. When you solve a puzzle and find the words that go into one of those little squares, you've learned something about your language and its history. Who knows what you'll find inside the square. What you find may be something new to you or it can be a simple synonym for another word. You might even discover that the word you thought was unrelated to this clue actually means something similar! Maybe your word is a cognate of a foreign language word or a homophone. As you'll see, solving a crossword puzzle can be a fun way to learn about words and their meanings. For example, if the definition of the clue is "a form of entertainment" and the answer is "show", then show means entertainment. That's called synonymy. It is the same word just with different shades of meaning. There are other words that mean the same thing, but they are also homophones, which means that when you hear them spoken they are pronounced or spelled differently. The funny thing is when you search for "crossword" on Google, they'll give you "crosser" in the auto suggestion section! It is a completely legitimate word that has absolutely no relation to what you're looking for. I guess cross and crosser just look similar. You can go on and search for all the synonyms you want, but what if you were looking for something completely different? What about "cross-referencing"? "Cross-reference" is a real word, so probably what you're looking for is something like "cross-reference". However, there is no such word as "cross-referencing". So that's a clue that you need to solve a puzzle to find out how it's spelled. However, if you go look up the word in a dictionary, it will be there.
